Telraam S2 pauses in the evening hours

We operate two Telraam S2:

#1: Telraam - Oedemer Weg
#2: Telraam - Soltauer Straße

The two stations were not in operation for a
operation.

Station #1 has been back in operation since 22.02.2025,
Station #2 since 07.03.2025. Both at new locations.

Station #1 works without any problems. With station #2 there is
phenomenon that counting only takes place during daylight hours.

Both stations work with the firmware version
S2 1.15.1-rc3 - 393476 (NRF - K210). According to Github
the current version is 1.17.1 (18/09/2024)

My questions:

  1. will the two stations get the update to the
    version 1.17.1 (18/09/2024)?

  2. why is it that station #2 pauses in the evening hours?

Hi there - thanks for the question

FOr future reference, individual device issues are always best sent to support@telraam.net so we can better look into device issues.

However, there is some interest in this question for some other users, so I’m happy to do what I can here, but you may want to follow-up with my colleague directly.

I believe that the devices were not active when we ran the most recent upgrade process for devices, so they may not have received the new updates. This is required in order to have the night count algorithm added.

It is also possible, and related, that if the signal in the location they are installed, is very weak, that although they can send the small data files we need to report data, they might struggle to download the much larger update files. When you look at the screen you will see either an ‘X’ (no signal), or 1, 2, 3 or 4 bars in the top right to indicate reception strength.

We will try to send a specific signal to these devices to get them download the most recent update, but it might be useful to move them (specifically the device on Soltauer Straße) to an area with better reception just for the update (you will see the screen show an update message) then put them back in the counting locations.

Here’s a reply from our tech team who’ve been looking into this for you:

  • Device #1 has an excellent connectivity and was updated to nRF 1.17.1 and already has newest K210-version
  • Device #2 has a very bad connectivity and has a lot of difficulties downloading any new FW. It will now try every 9h to update both nRF and K210 FW.

We have very low expectations that this will succeed with such low connectivity. I have forced it 4 times now, but it did not succeed yet.
If you want to have a better success rate it would be safer to move the device to a place with better connectivity (e.g. for 24h to give it some time to update). It could be that there are better places in the home: e.g. in the attic with view on a window. Or move it to another place where there is better connectivity.
In the Oedemer Weg the connectivity is excellent.

Thanks for your support, Rob.

Unfortunately, there is no way to position the camera more favorably inside the house. And the location itself is excellent as far as the view of the street is concerned. I would hate to give it up.

Do I understand you correctly: I could move the camera to any other location for 24 hours and then wait for the update there? Then set the camera up again at the previous location?

The connection is apparently not completely unusable. The counting results during the day are obviously transmitted. And the alignment of the camera also worked - but only on the second day after installation.

Hi there,

You do not have to give up this location, it is good enough to measure, but not to update the FW.

Indeed you can move your device to another location just for updating, this could be another location in the house: attic, backyard, shelter, wherever it will not get wet and there is a better connection, or in a completely different location. You can put it close to a window with power on and black part facing the sky. Of course measurements during this time will still be logged but will be wrong.
This device should update its nRF FW and its K210 FW.

You can check if it succeeded by looking online or by going into debug mode (unplug the device and plug it back in whilst holding button pressed see Troubleshooting with the S2). nRF FW should be 1.17.1 and K210 FW should be 4.3.6

I do not know which are good places to update, but device #1 had very good connectivity.
If power is an issue on some places, you could use a standard external battery and connect it with USB C cable. Our device is only using 1W, so you should be able to leave it on for several hours on an external battery.

I hope this helps!

Hi, Team Telraam.

Amazing: the update worked after all in the night from March 12 to March 13, 2025. The station was in the same location the whole time as it had been since installation. It is now firmware version S2 1.17.1 - 393476 (NRF - K210).

What has not changed is that the station does not record any data during the night and cannot be reached via the Telraam Map during this time. When clicking, the message “Camera is connected but does not detect movement at the moment” appears.

What else could we do here?

Regards

Hi,

great it worked. But apparently only the nRF did update. The K210 FW (which has the night model) still needs to be updated. This will be more difficult than the nRF one since it is twice as big.
So since the K210 is not updated yet, you will not have the night counts, from the moment the device succeeds in updating the K210 FW, it will have the night counts.

We have the same story here, if we try enough times on this location, it could one day succeed, same as it succeeded with nRF (it will be more difficult, since the size is around 2 times bigger). If you move the device to a place with far better connectivity, it will update faster.

Kind regards

Hi, Team Telram.

When comparing the firmware of both stations

#1: S2 1.17.1 - 393476 (NRF - K210)
#2: S2 1.17.1 - 393988 (NRF - K210)

I can see that the six-digit number sequences

393476
393988

differ in the last three digits. Only when station #1 also displays 393988 is the update complete?

Kind regards

Correct, both should have 393988. But are you not mixing #1 and #2 now. It is the device in Soltauer Strasse that still needs to update to 393988 right (can not check it now)?

Kind regards

Hi, Team Telraam.

Yes, you are right. I mixed up the two locations in the version details. So the correct one is:

#1: Telraam - Oedemer Weg → S2 1.17.1 - 393988 (NRF - K210)
#2: Telraam - Soltauer Straße → S2 1.17.1 - 393476 (NRF - K210)
